Château Latour--Vintage 1985
Pauillac, 1er cru classé. Château-bottled
Vintage note: 1985 in Bordeaux was marked by a very cold winter with temperatures dropping to -18C, damaging some vines. By the time the sap started to rise in March, however, conditions had improved, and flowering occurred at the customary time, and the spring weather was marked by alternating hot and wet, although August was very hot and dry, and September and October were solidly sunny and dry, giving a good finish to the season and healthy grapes. The harvest was completed between 1 October and 17 October. Full bodied and lush wines were produced, especially by those growers that waited until mid-October to pick their Cabernets.
"The 1985 Latour at a recent dinner provided an interesting experience. When initially opened, the nose was richly fruity but showed a very smoky, almost burnt note at first. After several hours in the decanter, the wine had changed completely to reveal an almost sweet cherry-like fruit character with none of that smoky edge but a lovely mineral note. On the palate the wine was tannic but not overly so, with substance and punch that is just now beginning to soften and open. Same as my last note in Aug 2010, we need to reconsider the 85 vintage." At the estate, Charles Curtis M. W., March 2011
"Lovely elegant bouquet with gorgeous sweet fruit, licorice and gentle spices. A touch of dryness in the fresh and savory finish. Mature and really beautiful now." At the estate, Paulo Pong, March 2011
