VINTAGE 1899--1900
Lots 332 to 335. Both of the fin de siècle vintages were extraordinary for many reasons. In the first place, they were very large vintages. 1900 was a record yield that would stand for more than twenty years. In addition to this, they were acknowledged early as being of superb quality, and this reputation has been maintained for over a century. The wine world had seen back-to-back great vintages in 1864 and 1865, 1874 and 1875, and now there was the pair of the century, 1899 1900. These would be followed of course by the famous 1928/29 pair and the 1989/90 pair in our time. Yet another particularity is that the wines of both vintages were remarkably cheap to boot! One wishes for more vintages such as this today. Both were characterized by near-perfect growing conditions, yet they produced different styles of wine: the 1899s were silky, approachable, delicate and full of charm and finesse, while the 1900 were robust, powerful and tannic. Both have kept remarkably well and the best will certainly continue to do so.
Château Latour--Vintage 1900
Pauillac, 1er cru classé. Château-bottled
"One of the Latour's greatest vintages, its condition now of course depending on the provenance. In 1970, tasted at the château, magnficiently deep, with palate to match, still pretty massive with lots of grip. Recently, a sweet, ripe, harmonious thoroughbred, which after 75 minutes in the glass, soared opulently and exotically." Michael Broadbent M. W., October 1994
