George Irving (1774-1820), the son of John Irving of Burnfoot, Ecclefechan, Dumfriesshire, was Chairman of the Colonial Bank and the Royal Steam Packet Company. His brother John was a partner in Reid Irving & Co., who in 1816-17 won a contract reputedly worth over a million pounds to supply uniforms to the Russian army. Another work by Agasse, showing George Irving riding in an extensive landscape, was included in the Agasse exhibition at the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire, Geneva, and the Tate Gallery, London, in 1988-89, no. 20.
