Adam Weisweiler, maître in 1778.
François-Honoré-Georges and Georges II Jacob, dit Jacob-Desmalter, flourished 1803-1813.

This 'Etruscan' black table, designed in the Louis XVI 'antique' manner, was undoubtedly commissioned by a marchand-mercier such as Martin-Eloi Lignereux. The heir to Daguerre's atelier, Lignereux is known to have employed both Adam Weisweiler and François-Honoré-Georges Jacob-Desmalter and his brother Georges II Jacob, and tables of this distinctive X-form with legs in ormolu and steel are documented by both ébénistes.

Perhaps the closest related example in the design of the metalwork is the table écritoire executed in thuya and stamped by Weisweiler, which was sold anonymously at Drouot, Paris, 19 November 1981, lot 207 (illustrated in P. Lemonnier, Weisweiler, Paris, 1983, p. 88). As Lemonnier argued, the metalwork was almost certainly executed by Thomire-Duterme et cie., a hypothesis backed up by the accounts of furniture supplied by Weisweiler to Thomire-Duterme between 1808-09.

However, this model is more usually associated with Jacob-Desmalter on the basis of a table à travailler, executed in mahogany, supplied by the latter in August 1810 to the Empress Marie-Louise for the salon des jeux of the Grand Trianon. Prix demandé 600 F, réglé 575 F (D. Ledoux-Lebard, Le Grand Trianon Tome I, Paris, 1975, pp. 42-3). A further related table, also executed by Jacob-Desmalter for the château de Malmaison is illustrated in M-N. de Grandry, Le Mobilier Français Directoire Consular Empire, Poitiers, 1996, p. 92.
