Formerly in the collection of Professor Calvert E. Norland
Thence by descent
Professor Calvert E. Norland (1908 - 2002) was an entomologist and agricultural inspector from California who served as an officer and medical entomologist in the United States Army during World War II. He was stationed in India, China and Japan and left the army at the end of the war as a Lieutenant Colonel. On 31 July 1945, while in Calcutta, Professor Norland was introduced to Jamini Roy and visited his studio. Having previously seen Jamini Roy's paintings at the Ariontork Museum, Norland was truly impressed with Roy's technique and style and purchased several works at this time.
In his letters back home he described Roy's art and his enthusiasm on having discovered his works. Professor Norland and his wife had an extensive library and collection of art and art objects, manuscripts, prints, and artifacts much of which was donated to and is part of the collection of the San Diego Museum of Art and the Special Collection of San Diego State University.
