Specialising in refractory brick, the Scottish-based Garnkirk Fire-Clay Company, established by the Sprot family, became pre-eminent around 1850. In 1869, it was said to be the biggest fireclay company in the world, covering six acres and employing over 300 men. The site was demolished in 1898.
The current lot appears in the 1867 catalogue as number 63.
