EGYPTIAN REVIVAL
Western Europe has been fascinated with ancient Egypt for centuries, from Napoleon's Egyptian Campaign (1798-1801), to the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 and again in 1922 with the discovery of King Tutankhamun's tomb by English archaeologist Howard Carter. In particular the events of 1798 reignited a vogue for Egyptian-inspired design with people avidly following the work of the scholarly expedition that had accompanied Napoleon's Egyptian campaign. Voyages dans la base et la haute Egypte - the account published by its leader, Dominique-Vivant Denon became a best-seller in both French and English. In Britain, Egyptomania was intensified by Nelson's victory at the Nile. The lots offered here capture some of the flavour Egypt ranging from the impressive surtout de table to the pair of candelabra with hieroglyphic motifs.

Comprising:- a four-light candelabrum/centrepiece, a pair of comport dishes and a pair of vases, all on three resting camel supports above triform bases, with moulded glass dishes and vases, on a three-piece rectangular mirror plateau with rounded ends and shell, scroll and floral borders, the centrepiece with both dishes and nozzles for use as a candelabrum if desired.
