Recently closed after nearly two centuries of continuous operation, Galt & Brothers Jewelers was a prestigious Washington D.C. jewelry firm which counted many notable politicians as clients, including Abraham Lincoln. Upon her husband's death in 1908, Edith Galt took over management of the store and subsequently married President Woodrow Wilson in 1915.

This diamond was purchased in the same 1968 auction in which Richard Burton purchased a 33.19 carat diamond ring for Elizabeth Taylor, which later became known as The Elizabeth Taylor Diamond and was sold at Christie's New York in December 2011 for $8,818,500.
