In 1914 Wolter moves from Laren to Amsterdam were he found a studio on the third floor of the Amsteldijk 47. From the start, he was highly fascinated by the view from his studio window: in the foreground the bridge to the Ceintuurbaan, across the river the boat house of the rowing-club and behind it the large imposing Amstel hotel. In the distance a glimpse of Carré theatre and the Magere brug. The subject was always the same, but the shifting play of light and colour over the water captivated the artist. Wolter approached the lightness and vivacity of the Parisians in his Amsterdam city views.
