Addario Lung Cancer Foundation and the University of California San Francisco Thoracic Oncology Lung Cancer Program (Lots 239-250). This cane handle is one of twelve lots offered from the Vertical Art Collection, formed by an American private collector who chooses to remain anonymous. On November 30th a larger group of works from the same collection will be offered for sale at Christie's New York. These sales reveal but a glimpse of a collection that only became known more broadly in 2008 with the publication of Vertical Art: The Enduring Beauty of Antique Canes and Walking Sticks. The startling tableaux by photographer Umberto Barone depicts canes of semi-precious stones inset with diamonds within a dazzling panorama of canes of diverse periods, styles and materials.

The tapering cylindrical handle enamelled overall in translucent white over wavy guilloché ground, within laurel-chased borders, the upper border with a scrolling band of chased laurel vines on a ground enamelled in opaque lilac, the top centring a rose-cut diamond finial, marked on collar and inside rim, with a later fitted case

拍品專文

The present cane handle was included in the list of items requisitioned by Soviet authorities from the Fabergé shop in Moscow in 1919. The cost was recorded as 425 roubles in 1919 and 85 roubles in 1913.
