Historical background of the property of a descendant of Ernst Ludwig Graf zu Rantzau, removed from Schloss Annettenhh and Schloss Noer
Annettenhöh
Christian Ulrich Hans Freiherr von Brockdorff, who was appointed as superior judge (Obergerichtsrat) and district administrator (Landrat) of the Duchies of Schleswig and Holstein in 1811, acquired the Annettenhh estate in the 1830s. The estate, located near the city of Schleswig, was named after his wife Annette Freiin von Brockdorff, n©e von Lowtzow.
In 1873, his son Ludwig Ulrich Hans Freiherr von Brockdorff and his wife Cäcilie adopted four-year old Ulrich Carl Christian Graf zu Rantzau (1869-1928), who later changed his last name to Brockdorff-Rantzau.
Like his adoptive father, Ulrich Brockdorff-Rantzau held various positions in the diplomatic service, in 1912 for example he became the German ambassador to Copenhagen. After the end of the German Empire in 1918 he was first appointed as State Secretary (Staatssekretär) and in February 1919 German Foreign Minister. As head of the German delegation sent to negotiate the Treaty of Versailles he was unable to reach an agreement on more moderate conditions. Consequently he refused to sign the Treaty as presented by the allies and resigned as Foreign Minister in June 1919. During the negotiations he gave a remarkable speech, in which he warned of a second world war should the provions of the Treaty not be modified.
Since Ulrich Brockdorff-Rantzau never married, his twin brother Ernst Ludwig Graf zu Rantzau (1869-1930), an art collector, inherited the Annettenhöh estate.
Noer
The Noer estate, located near Kiel, in its current form was built in the 18th century. In 1831 the Danish princess Louise Auguste acquired the estate for her second son, Friedrich Emil August (1800-1865), known as the Prince of Noer. After the Danish rule ended in 1864, the Prince of Noer was declared Fürst of Noer and the Noer estate became his family residence.
His son Friedrich Christian (1830-1881), who was declared Count von Noer after his msalliance with Carmelita Eisenblat, had two daughters and no son, so that the family line Graf von Noer died out.
The older daughter, Carmelita Countess von Noer (1871-1948) was married to Ernst Ludwig Graf zu Rantzau, thereby uniting the estates of Annettenhöh and Noer. Their only child, Frederik August Graf zu Rantzau (1895-1945), lived in Noer and Annettenhöh.
