Lahore based artist, Ayaz Jokhio is intrigued by the interpretation of text and image. With an astute understanding of the local culture, he is watchful of how textbooks, classrooms and the media circulate ideas on the meaning of nationhood and nationality in Pakistan. Like the great conceptual artists before him; Marcel Broodthaers, Sol Lewitt and John Baldessari, Jokhio deemphasizes aesthetic and material concerns in favor of an engagement with ideas.
"I have no specific signature style. My work is not even based on any certain topic; my subject matters change time and time again, as do the techniques I use in my practice. In the end I do realize that all subjects and materials are secondary. What comes first is the visual impact of the work itself as seen by the viewer. The viewer, himself, is an artist, for he conceives of a given piece in his own way, one that is unique to him." (Artist Statement, Hanging Fire, exhibition catalogue, New York, 2009, p. 94)
Jokhio is a student of Rashid Rana and, has participated in many international exhibitions including: Devi Art Foundation, New Delhi (2010); The Sixth Asia Pacific Triennial, Brisbane (2009) and Asia Society Museum, New York (2009).
