La ligne a toujours occupé une place primordiale dans l'oeuvre de Tom Wesselmann. C'est en effet par le dessin que le jeune homme fait son entrée dans le monde des arts, en 1952, alors qu'il est affecté dans le nord-est du Kansas en tant que recrue de l'armée américaine. Pour occuper son temps au cours de cette période, il s'essaie à la réalisation de croquis humoristiques sur la vie à l'armée. Y ayant pris goût, il embrasse alors rapidement une carrière de dessinateur de cartoons, rencontrant d'ailleurs un certain succès avec la publication de certaines de ses planches dans des revues telles que 1000 Jokes et True. Ce n'est que plus tard qu'il se convertira à l'huile et à la toile, ne perdant pour autant jamais son attachement particulier pour le dessin, pour sa pureté et pour sa capacité, comparable à nulle autre technique, à fixer en quelques traits une ligne, une forme, un mouvement; comme en attestera notamment le très grand nombre de travaux préparatoires sur papier exécutés tout au long de sa carrière.
Les peintures sur aluminium découpé, réalisées à partir de 1983 et dont 1960 Judy with Floral Wallpaper offre un exemple particulièrement abouti, illustrent la préoccupation de Tom Wesselmann d'explorer encore et toujours les possibilités d'évolution et de dépassement du dessin. L'idée de leur conception est venue à l'artiste alors qu'il réalisait l'un de ses Drop-Out (toiles découpées où un détail du corps féminin est traité en négatif, la forme étant dessinée par le contour de la toile): 'pour la première fois, j'ai assemblé deux toiles découpées entre elles, l'une en forme de bras et l'autre en forme de cuisse. J'ai alors pensé qu'il serait intéressant de les connecter l'une l'autre grâce à une ligne qui figurerait un corps. En recourant à l'aluminium découpé et peint (et ce avant l'apparition des techniques de découpage par laser; chaque oeuvre étant donc découpée à la main par l'artiste), Tom Wesselmann parvient donc à transposer en trois dimensions la fluidité et la vivacité de la ligne, comme si le dessin avait été réalisé directement sur le mur. Ce faisant il offre une synthèse, extrêmement novatrice d'un point de vue formel, entre le dessin, la peinture et la sculpture.

Mais quand le même dessin de métal est réalisé en couleurs, cela devient un nu davantage qu'un dessin. Le sujet devient alors l'élément dominant' (ibid., p. 34). Réalisé en 1986, 1960 Judy with Floral Wallpaper apparaît en ce sens comme un aboutissement des recherches formelles que l'artiste poursuit depuis trois ans. Aux côtés de Claire Selley, qui deviendra Claire Wesselmann en 1963, Judy est le modèle que Tom Wesselmann aura le plus souvent reproduit dans ses oeuvres. It was only later he would move to oil and canvas, without ever abandoning his fondness for drawing due to its purity and its ability, unlike any other technique, to capture with a few strokes an outline, a shape, a movement - as illustrated by the large number of preparatory works on paper executed throughout his career.
The paintings on shaped aluminium produced from 1983 - and of which 1960 Judy with Floral Wallpaper is a particularly accomplished example - illustrate Tom Wesselmann's desire to constantly continue to explore the potential for evolving and surpassing drawing. The idea for their design came to the artist while he was producing one of his Drop-Outs (shaped canvases in which a detail of the female body is treated in negative, the shape being provided by the edge of the canvas). By using shaped and painted aluminium (before the development of laser-cutting techniques, requiring each shape to be hand-cut by the artist), Tom Wesselmann manages to transpose the fluidity and intensity of the line into three dimensions, as if the drawing had been executed directly onto the wall. In doing so he offers a synthesis - extremely novel from a formal viewpoint - between drawing, painting and sculpture.
The artist began the series in black and white, before realising the extent to which colour would transform his hybrid objects into completely independent works. Produced in 1986, 1960 Judy with Floral Wallpaper can therefore be seen as the fulfilment of the formal research carried out by the artist over the previous three years. Along with Claire Selley, who was to become Claire Wesselmann in 1963, Judy is the model Tom Wesselmann most often reproduced in his works. The inclusion of the date in the title of the work explains the bond between the painter and model since his first creations at the turn of the 1960s, and shows to what extent Wesselmann always sought to tirelessly rework the subjects of his studies, constantly seeking to enhance their artistic presentation, achieving a particularly striking elegance and purity with the paintings on shaped aluminium.
In a few lines - tracing within the space the feminine outlines of the body, echoed in the floral pattern of the wallpaper - we perceive Wesselmann's mastery and his skill as an illustrator. We may also perceive his admiration for the artist who was probably his most recurrent reference, Henri Matisse. '[My father] often bemoaned the incomparable nature of Matisse's drawings wondering how he himself could ever truly draw when Matisse had already done it with such fluid and powerful lines.' (K. Wesselmann, Tom Wesselmann, Works on Paper: Retrospective, New York, 2005). By declaring his allegiance to the Fauvist master, Wesselmann renews his modernity through a new artistic treatment, thus placing the artist in the tradition of the great female nudes of the history of art.
