Born Dresden, Germany, 1932. Studied at the Dresden Art Academy, Dresden, Germany, 1952-57 and Düsseldorf Art Academy under Karl Otto Götz, Düsseldorf, Germany, 1961-63. Solo exhibitions include: The Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh, United Kingdom, 1997; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, California, 2002; Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao, Spain, 2004; National Art Museum of China, Beijing, China, 2008; Tate Modern, London, 2011. Taught at the Staatliche Kunstakademie, Düsseldorf, Germany, 1971-93. Winner of several awards including Wolf Prize in Arts, Jerusalem, Israel, 1995, and the Golden Lion, 47th Venice Biennale, 1997. He lives in Cologne, Germany.
