Yao Shiqing was a painter, calligrapher, and seal carver from Sichuan and a student of Qi Baishi. Considering his studio name Han Shuang Xi Zhi (Hall of the Pair of Han Washers), the character xi (wash) probably refers to a brush washer used in a study; it is possible the Yao family obtained two Han-dynasty brush washers, and so used these treasures in the name of their study, which Qi Baishi inscribed.
