The letters 'LP' (Lone Pine) are still faintly visible in the hillside of this early print. Adams spotted them out initially as he found them intrusive, but this exercise was time-consuming and often only partially successful. The problem was finally resolved in 1976 when Alan Ross, then Adams' assistant, had the bold idea (without seeking Ansel's prior permission but with his subsequent approval) to etch out the offending initials on the negative.
