徐冰的《天書》計畫始於1987 年,第一次展出於二十世紀八十年代末的北京中國美術館。 天書,顧名思義是指那些無法被解讀、被理解的深奧書籍。這套書籍,一套四冊,以中國傳統線裝方式裝訂,遵循宋版印刷的風格,佈滿看似熟悉的中文方塊字。這些被創造出的文字包含普通 的中文漢字邊旁部首,如水字旁,土字旁等。但形成的文字卻是不可識別的。徐冰認為正是由於各種矛盾與荒誕,使“讀”的工作無法推進;但沒有字典化的絕對解釋,又使得對這些字元的解讀具有了無限的空間。
