LIN FENGMIAN (1900-1991)
THE FORRER COLLECTION OF CHINESE PAINTINGS Albert Kurt Forrer, migrated in 1946 to Shanghai as a Swiss merchant. Initially working for a Swiss import & export company, he learnt to speak, read and write Chinese. In 1949 he successfully established a barter trade system for international companies in Shanghai. In the mid 1950's he accepted the position as director of the Swiss Aluminium Rolling Mills in Shanghai. He and his wife, Marfried Zubler, who shared similar interests in contemporary Chinese art and Chinese antiques, married in 1950 and had two sons. The young couple combined their collections of artwork and expanded it extensively over the next decade. They mainly focused on contemporary Chinese paintings, antiques and stone rubbings. Together, their collection includes artists such as Pang Zhao, also known as Pang Zuoyu (1915-1969), Fu Shuda (1910-1973)and Lin Fengmian (1900-1991). They focusing a significant part of their collection around his works and style. They knew the artist personally and acquired the paintings directly from him. Beside many works by the artist from his early days to 1960 the collection contains many paintings of Lin's successful students like Ai Vee Li as well as stunning paintings by unknown artists, attributed to the School of Lin Fengmian. The present collection of Lin Fengmian paintings stem from his peak period (1950-1960) and form a very strong and interesting body of work that demonstrates the diversity of Lin's practice at that time.
