Karl Hofer (1878-1955)
PROPERTY FROM THE MARIANNA KISTLER BEACH MUSEUM OF ART, KANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY, SOLD TO BENEFIT THE ACQUISITIONS FUND Christie’s is honored to offer three exemplary works by German Expressionist, Karl Hofer, from the Beach Museum at Kansas State University. These three works were bequeathed by Colonel Francis W. ImMasche to the Museum in 1983. After serving in the American sector of Berlin in 1947 on a special assignment, ImMasche sought a souvenir of his military duty in Germany. Opting for paintings rather than Meissen porcelain, ImMasche visited Karl Hofer in his studio at Barstrasse 9 in Berlin-Wilmersdorf. On a subsequent trip to the artist’s atelier, ImMasche acquired Korb mit Birnen, Blick über den Luganer See and another work from the artist in exchange for CARE (Cooperative for American Remittances to Europe) packages, which contained sought after provisions. Upon returning to the United States, the Colonel later acquired Sonnenblumen in Vase from another American collector. He stayed in contact with the artist, with whom he had developed a friendship.
