Little is known about the Antwerp artist Gaspar Thielens. He is documented to have painted flower and vanitas still lifes, as well as religious scenes. Although registered as a pupil with the Antwerp guild in 1647, he only joined the guild in 1677, possibly due to a foreign sojourn.
The present lot reveals that Thielens must have been influenced by the early flower still lifes of Jan Davidsz. de Heem. The well preserved flowers and their various textures are beautifully rendered with a high degree of naturalism and spatial depth.
