Born in Shanghai in 1960, Wang Tiande studied at the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts from which he graduated in 1988. He currently teaches at Fudan University in Shanghai and serves as the Dean of the Art and Design Department.
A keen innovator of the calligraphy and painting traditions, Wang creates conceptual, experimental works that possess a distinctive mixed-media style, combining different materials and techniques. During an artist residency in Paris in 2002, the ash of Wang's lit cigarette was accidentally flicked onto the xuan paper, hollowing it out and creating a shape by chance. Inspired by this experience, Wang transforms his landscape paintings - often accompanied by calligraphy - by directly burning onto paper with cigarette or incense. Language, text and image thus become intertwined in Wang's work: the layers of paper with burnt marks and ink obstruct the viewer from gleaning any meaning from the painting, creating delicate and complex palimpsests of the modern age.
