Rising from the circular partly fluted foot to bulbous body tapering to a tubular neck, the spout with a hinged cover, surmounted by a baluster finial, the body and cover repoussé and chased with scrolling vines, applied with a finely cast and chased Pegasus, the scrolling handle chased to imitate vines, the body engraved with a dedication in Russian ‘To Major Prince I.Z. Baratov / 1868 / from H[is] I[mperial] H[ighness] Gr[and] Duke Alexei Alexandrovich’, interior gilt, marked on foot and spout

Prince Ivan Zakharovich Baratov served as a non-commissioned officer in the Apsheronskii Infantry Regiment from 1851. He fought in the Crimean war, was promoted to Ensign in 1854 for his services and later achieved the rank of Major.
