Cosimo de’ Medici III visited Holland in 1667 and 1669, frequenting the studios of several artists including Rembrandt, and commissioned portraits from Ter Borch. Peter Sutton, however, dismissed the theory that the sitter in the present portrait is Cosimo (loc. cit.), noting instead that this painting is “very close in conception” to the collaborative Posthumous Portrait of Moses ter Borch by Gerard and his half sister, Gesina ter Borch (Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam).
