Traditionally depicted in a garden or in a landscape, Vertumnus and Pomona appear here in an interior without any recognizable attributes, such as, a sickle for the nymph Pomona. The figure of Pomona, a naked young woman seen from the back, can be traced back to a picture of the same subject by Cornelis Cornelisz. Van Haarlem (present whereabouts unknown). This composition inspired, among others, Emanuel de Witte's Vertumnus and Pomona, dated 1644, in Boijmans van Beuningen Museum, Rotterdam and Caesar van Everdingen's Vertumnus and Pomona, c.1637-1640, in Fundacion Coleccion Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid).
