'Go Into Business' was a famous buzzword that originated from the age of economic revolution and open trade, literally meaning 'a dib in the ocean to go into business.' Financial reforms were further expanded in the 90's to historic proportions. Buoyed by the new age of hope and openness, throngs of government officials, the intelligentsia, particularly young adults from all circles, broke away from the overprotective employment networks and launched their own startups, committing their time and resources into the epochal trend of reforms to trail-blaze a new business domain. These aspiring entrepreneurs were the driving force behind the economic boom of the 90's.
Xue Feng's artistic style began to take on a more definitive signature after 1995. This piece features a richly complex background, collaged with copious images with singed edges. A symbolic figure stands in the foreground. By processing these icons through the fusion of the foreground and background, Xue endows the piece with new significance. In Going Into Business (Lot 419) a young man plunges into the ocean fearlessly, standing proud and erect. The ocean is awash with images of currencies of different countries. These same-sized images homogenized all the originally-independent currencies, dehumanised them, and downgraded them into monotonous symbols. They also constitute the waves of the ocean tides to suggest the trend in economic reforms. The image in the foreground is a cookie-cutter hero hailed from the Chinese revolutionary opera, symbolising the pioneer of every era.
By virtue of accustoming exiting images, and the appropriating of two processed components found in existing materials, Xue creates an individualised representation through deconstruction and reconstruction, allowing a new interpretative look at historic events. This metaphoric, humorous milieu radiates outward from the composition. The cultural tolerance, critique and metaphoric messages in the piece aptly reflect Xue's perception of historic and cultural climate of the time.
