Bartolommeo Nazari was one of the leading Italian portraitists of the first half of the eighteenth century. Born in Ciusone, near Bergamo, he trained in Venice, and later, under Francesco Trevisani, in Rome. His clients in Venice included leading figures such as Reichsgraf Feldmarschal Johann Matthias von der Schulenburg.

The Porter family acquired The Court House, Birlingham, an 18th century manor house, from Major General Amherst in 1812. Past residents have included Major Lord Charles Cavendish Bentinck, who was Master of the Croome Hunt; the 11th Earl of Coventry, who stayed at The Court House in 1930-1931 while his home at Croome Court was being renovated; and Sammy Davis, Jr. and Peter Lawford, who rented the house in 1968 whilst flming ‘Salt and Pepper’ in Worcestershire.

We are grateful to Prof. Ugo Ruggeri for confirming the attribution on the basis of photographs.
