This pastel is a study for the oil Paule Gobillard en robe de bal, 1887 (Bataille-Wildenstein no. 210). Paule Gobillard (1869-1946) was the niece of Berthe Morisot. After her mother's death in 1893, Paule and her sister Jennie went to live with their cousin Julie Manet, who was the daughter of Berthe Morisot and Eugéne Manet.
