Questo bellissimo arazzo del 1983, ricamato a mano proviene dalla serie più celebre di Alighiero Boetti - le mappe, alla quale l'artista si è dedicato per oltre due decenni. Basati sui dati cartografici più recenti all'epoca, gli arazzi con i loro dettagli accurati e i loro audaci colori raffigurano le terre del pianeta suddivise in varie nazioni, regni e unioni, e ogni singola opera fornisce una documentazione del panorama geopolitico nel momento specifico della sua realizzazione. Ogni nazione è riconoscibile dal disegno distintivo della sua bandiera, anche se visibile solo in parte all'interno dei ridotti confini del suo territorio, creando uno scontro scintillante di colori e simboli contro lo sfondo monocromatico degli oceani. Boetti era affascinato dai duplici concetti di Ordine e Disordine, perfettamente rappresentati in queste immagini del pianeta, in cui l'ordine intricato e dettagliato delle carte si disintegra in un groviglio disordinato di schermaglie di confine, confini riscritti e bandiere incomplete, rivelando lo stato generale di flusso nel quale il mondo esiste. Anzi, nel suo insieme, la serie delle mappe può essere considerata una drammatica dichiarazione critica dei giochi politici che si svolgono sul palcoscenico internazionale, mettendo in evidenza la natura arbitraria delle divisioni a tavolino della terra, mentre confini, paesi e bandiere cambiano e si alterano da un arazzo all'altro - in maniera a volte sottile, a volte drammatica - in risposta a cambiamenti di regime, periodi di conflitto, e mutevoli strutture del potere nel mondo.
Nell'opera qui presentata, la mappa è incorniciata da un bordo bianco e nero, all'interno del quale le linee continue del testo giustappongono la regolarità geometrica dell'alfabeto latino con la grafia morbida e fluida del Farsi. Tradotte, le frasi rivelano il luogo dove l'arazzo è stato ideato - Kabul, in Afghanistan - e alludono al forte legame dell'artista con il paese. Il messaggio che scorre lungo il lato destro, per esempio, dice 'Alighiero e Boetti si trovano nel deserto', mentre il lato sinistro dichiara '[A]lighiero e Boetti erano entrambi presenti a Kabul'. Durante gli anni Settanta, Boetti si è recato spesso in Afghanistan per controllare come veniva il ricamo, spesso modificando leggermente il disegno degli arazzi oppure fornendo istruzioni sulla scelta dei colori e sui particolari delle bandiere. Inoltre, variazioni nella tonalità e nelle ombre sono evidenti nel filo rosso utilizzato su tutta la superficie della mappa, con i territori dell'Unione Sovietica, della Cina, del Canada e della Groenlandia che sembrano di tonalità molto più accese rispetto ad altre sezioni. In modo analogo, il blu variegato degli oceani sembra marcare il passaggio del tempo, con le sottili variazioni di colore che corrispondono alle tante bobine di filo di seta diverse utilizzate nelle varie fasi di creazione della mappa.
Infatti, il tempo costituisce un tema centrale nella serie delle mappe nel suo insieme. This beautiful, hand-embroidered tapestry from 1983 forms part of Alighiero Boetti's most famous series of artworks - the Mappe (Maps), which occupied the artist for over two decades of his career. Based on the most up to date cartographic records available, these highly detailed, boldly coloured tapestries show the Earth's landmasses fragmented into various countries, kingdoms and unions, with each unique artwork offering a documentary record of the geo-political landscape at the specific moment of its conception. Each country can be identified by their flag's distinct patterns, which, although often only partially visible within the strict borders of their territories, create a dazzling melee of colour and symbols, set against the monochrome ground of the oceans. The dual concepts of Ordine e disordine (Order and disorder) which so fascinated Boetti, are perfectly embodied in these images of the globe, as the intricate, highly detailed order of these charts dissolves into a disorderly tangle of border skirmishes, redefined territories and partial flags, revealing the general state of flux in which the world exists. Indeed, considered together, the Mappe series can be seen as a dramatic critical statement of the political power games played out on the world stage, highlighting the arbitrary nature of these man-made divisions of the earth, as borders, countries and flags change and alter between tapestries - sometimes subtly, sometimes dramatically - in response to changing regimes, periods of conflict, and shifting power structures around the world.
In the present work, the map is framed by a black and white border, in which continuous strings of text juxtapose the geometric regularity of the Latin alphabet with passages of flowing, calligraphic Farsi script. Translated, these messages reveal the location of the tapestry's creation - Kabul, Afghanistan - and hint at the artist's deep connection to the country. The message which flows along the right hand edge, for example, reads 'Alighiero and Boetti find each other in the desert,' while the left hand side states '[A]lighiero and Boetti were both present in Kabul.' Throughout the 1970s, Boetti had visited the country on a regular basis to inspect the embroidering as it progressed, often adjusting the designs of his tapestries slightly or providing instruction on colour choice and the detailing of the flags. However, following the Soviet invasion of 1979, access to the region became increasingly difficult, and Boetti was forced to dramatically re-structure his working process. As a result, from the early 1980s onwards the designs were drawn on to the cloth in Italy in a detailed and easily legible manner before being sent East, making it easier for the craftswomen to follow the pattern with as little direction as possible. This Mappa is one of a small number of works dating from this transitional period, as Boetti began to reconnect with his contacts in the region, and re-start production of the grand Mappe tapestries, working remotely from Italy.
Boetti revelled in the idiosyncrasies this geographical disconnect and the hand-crafted process produced, with the unexpected results proffered by chance, error and the peculiarities of the unsupervised embroiderers altering each design in unique, subtle ways. For example, in the present work, the signature vibrant yellow of the Brazilian flag is absent, leaving this portion of the Mappa incomplete. Variations in tone and shade, meanwhile, are visible in the red thread used across the map, with areas such as the Soviet Union, China, Canada and Greenland appearing in a much more vibrant hue than other sections. Similarly, the variegated blue of the oceans can be seen to visually chart the passage of time, with the subtle shifts of colour corresponding to the multiple bobbins of silk thread used at different stages in the map's creation.
Indeed, time is a central theme in the Mappe series as a whole. While each tapestry was shaped by the circumstances of a particular moment in history, indeed the exact moment of their conception, the tapestries had a much longer gestation period, with each of the intricate designs taking up to two years to complete. Thus, by the time they were finished and returned to the artist, the details of the maps were often significantly out of date. In this composition, for example, Boetti records a snapshot of the world in 1983, including in his depiction countries that no longer exist, borders that are no longer relevant and flags that have changed colour, design and meaning significantly in the interim years. For example, the expansive spread of the former Soviet Union dominates the right hand side of the tapestry, engulfing vast swathes of the continent in bright red, while the Yugoslavian flag still flies over the Balkan Peninsula. In Africa too, we see significant differences to today's landscape, with the flaming torch emblem of Zaire's flag prominently positioned in the centre of the country now known as the Democratic Republic of the Congo, while to the West, the final representation of the country Upper Volta is recorded, as the country would adopt an entirely new flag the following year, alongside its name-change to Burkina Faso.
This tale of political flux is most powerfully evoked by the two countries which remain 'flagless' in the composition, appearing as blank, white spaces within the map. In the South Western corner of Africa, Namibia is deliberately left unfilled in recognition of the country's ambiguous status at this time, as it remained embroiled in a brutal fight for independence from its South African neighbours. Equally, and perhaps most significantly, the borders of Afghanistan are also left unfilled, one of only a small number of Boetti's maps to do so. In contrast to the absence of Namibia's flag, however, which Boetti asked to be omitted as an expression of his disagreement with the South African occupation of the country, this choice was driven by the embroiderers of the tapestry themselves. Instructed by the artist to decide on the visual representation of their homeland, the embroiderers made the choice to leave the Afghan flag white, reflecting their uncertainty about the political situation of their home country in the wake of the invasion. In this way, the blank space highlights the personal situation of the embroiderers and becomes a poignant indicator of the very real, tragic and often fatal, effects war, domination and political machinations have on ordinary people living in these contested regions. In doing so, the artwork challenges the authority of the map as an objective and neutral bearer of information, and highlights the manner in which these charts reveal so little of the sometimes brutal disorder of the human tales that lie underneath.
