With Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives confirming production of the present watch reference 1463 with Cal. 13’’’ chronograph movement and 18K yellow gold case in 1960 and its subsequent sale on 22 September 1960.
Not seen on the market in almost 30 years, this remarkably well preserved example of the iconic reference 1463 exhibits all the fine qualities one could hope for in this model. Beautifully raised hard enamel outer scales and Patek Philippe signature frame the raised gold numerals of the dial while the light plays across the satinè surface to great effect. The patina of over 50 years of careful preservation have embued the gold case with an even, rich deep colour that is so desirable to collectors.
This “second series” reference 1463 was made in 1960 towards the end of second series production which ran from c1945 and finished c1961. As such, the present watch is fitted with the larger “Calatrava” winding crown only used on the reference 1463 from 1959. For second series watches, this means that only those few pieces made during this two year window have the new large Calatrava crown combined with the “chemin de Fer” classic second series type dial before the design changed for the third and final series c1961. This fine watch can be considered a great rarity both for its condition and its distinction as a watch made during a transitional period in the production history of one Patek Philippe’s best loved chronographs.
