We are grateful to Laurens Schoemaker of the RKD, The Hague, for his assistance cataloguing this lot. Dr. Schoemaker suggests a dating to the third quarter of the 17th century (written correspondence, 13 September 2016), and compares the present picture to several paintings given to Anthonissen, including the Fishing in choppy waters, which was with Vermeulen, The Hague, in 1964 (RKD illustration no. 1001241320).
