Van Nieulandt belonged to the group of Flemish immigrants who settled in Amsterdam in the first years of the seventeenth century. He also was active as an art dealer, appraiser and real estate agent. He lived in the Breestraat no. 5, just across the street from Rembrandt van Rijn.

The panel was researched on 26 February 2014 by Prof. Peter Klein, who dates it from 1608 onwards.
