Ward regularly depicted both his and his patrons' dogs, capturing not only the characteristics of the breed, but something of their individual character as well, in rapid sketches. He also exhibited a number of paintings of dogs throughout his career, including (at the Royal Academy) Portrait of a terrier, in 1807 and 1811, Portrait of a favourite greyhound, the property of T. F. Heathcote, Esq. in 1814, and Portrait of Rover, a favourite spaniel, the property of the Earl of Powis, 1821.
