‘Maybe we don’t yet have the right answer for what makes a painting a Painting. Maybe there is no answer or maybe the answer is to question painting, like Stingel does, over and over, looking deep and shallow at the same time, scratching the surface or collapsing under the weight of one’s identity. For painting can be either a revolving new beginning or a final act stuck like a record on the same word or note.’
