Characterized by its timeless elegance, the present timepiece can be considered as the quintessential perpetual calendar. Manufactured between 1984 and 2007, the 3940 was created as a replacement for the reference 3450. Crafted in a slim gold case of undeniable appeal, the reference was at the time the slimmest automatic perpetual calendar wristwatch.
Produced in four series, The main design variants include sunken subsidiary dials as opposed to the rather beveled version, as well as a plain leap year dial instead of dials including quarter separations. Early examples bear a small signature to their dial and the designation “Swiss” was printed underneath the beady minute divisions.
In excellent overall condition, the present timepiece features a highly attractive gold case, with crisp hallmarks to its edges. The elegant silvered dial is characterized with three subsidiary dials displaying the day, month, date, leap year, moon phases as well as 24 hour indication.
Examples of reference 3940, both regular and the Chronometrie Beyer anniversary version, are illustrated and described in Patek Philippe Museum - Patek Philippe Watches - Volume II, p. 300, and in Patek Philippe Wristwatches by Martin Huber & Alan Banbery, second edition, pp 292 - 294.
