Their collection, built over a lifetime together, is a testament to their varied interests: from Old Master drawings to modern oils, from Greek antiquities to contemporary sculptures, from Régence furniture and Georgian silver to Persian carpets bought at the bazaars of Teheran in the 60’s. The thread unifying their collection was their fascination with humanity, from appreciating the universality of our shared history to diving down into the psychology of the individual.Evelyn Oremland (1932-1996) was a pioneer in Child Life and an author of works on the subject, she founded the Child Life Program at Mills College in Oakland, where a memorial garden commemorates her dedication to the school and to her students. Her love of children and the family was reflected in her taste in art and her particular interest in peoples of the world.Jerome Oremland (1929-2016) practiced as a Freudian psychoanalyst achieving local and international renown. He served as Chief of Psychiatry of Children’s Hospital in San Francisco for fifteen years, founded and animated many psychoanalytic organizations, and he lectured widely in the United States and Europe. He wrote psychoanalytical books on creativity, notably on Michelangelo. In more recent years he took to fiction, writing about Caravaggio, Venice, and travel. He was particularly proud of a recent achievement: he won the annual travel writing award from the New Yorker, the magazine to which he subscribed faithfully for 75 years – it wasa piece about Evie.

Santiago Rusiñol est né au sein d’une famille aisée de Barcelone en 1861, et montra très tôt un grand intérêt pour la peinture. Il était membre d’un groupe de peintres qui se retrouvait à Els Quatre Gats, cabaret où il rencontra Picasso. Entre 1899 et 1903, Picasso exécuta 21 portraits de son ami Rusiñol, qui constituent encore un témoignage de leur amitié durable.

Santiago Rusiñol was born into a wealthy Barcelona family in 1861, and from very early on showed an interest in painting. He was a member of the group of painters who congregated at El Quatre Gats, where he met Picasso. Between 1899 and 1903, Picasso executed 21 portraits of his friend, which remains a testament to the enduring friendship.
