The property of an important private European collector, the present Explorer II is offered in attractive overall condition with a coveted Mark I dial featuring the T Swiss T script at 6 o’clock. Due to ageing and exposure to external elements, the dial of the timepiece displays attractive luminous accents which have slightly aged throughout the years, as well as a straight seconds hands free of the luminous lollipop, which was fitted on the early examples of the reference and often replaced during servicing.
Launched in 1971, the Explorer II was primarily designed for speleologists. The model is fitted with a fixed bezel with 24 hour display and a special 24 hour hand that can be set to distinguish day from night hours or to read the current time in different time zones. Reference 1655 is frequently referred amongst collectors as the "Steve McQueen" or "Freccione", Italian for "big arrow".
