In excellent original overall condition, the present timepiece is a very rare and highly attractive example of the Sea-Dweller reference 1665. The beauty of the timepiece is emphasized through its magnificent dial with the highly coveted ‘Double Red’ signature. Furthermore, the case back not only matches the reference number 1665, but is stamped IV.67 indicating that it was built in the last quarter of 1967, also present are the final three digits of the serial number, 311.
This Rolex “Double-Red” Sea-Dweller is an asset to any collection. Its extremely early 1.7 million serial number dates the watch to 1968 and indeed, the date stamp in the back of the case shows it was produced in very late 1967, the year of the initial launch of this reference. It features the Mk II dial, distinguished by the bright red and crisp signature "SEA-DWELLER" and "SUBMARINER 2000", as well as the print being directly applied to the dial. The font on the second red line is slightly smaller, and the coronet is distinctive on the version II dials because of the slightly distorted spikes and almost non-existent "O" of the coronet.
The present watch DRSD is fitted with an Oyster bracelet 9315 with endlinks stamped 285 – absolutely correct for this model and period – and sold with a period brochure, box and display clip.
Ref. 1665
Made for approximately 10 years from 1967 to 1977, the reference 1665 was the first timepiece designed for use in saturation diving. It was fitted with a Rolex patent gas escape valve in the band and guaranteed waterproof to 610 metres depth. The valve was first developed on the Submariner model and allows helium and other gases to escape, enabling the watch to stand compression.
