First encountering the work of Paul Cézanne at Ambroise Vollard's gallery during a trip to France in 1909-10, Andrew Dasburg was instantly captivated, later recalling, "I was overwhelmed. Something happened like a bright light coming on." He would go on to write, "Cézanne is sublime, each contact with his art fills me with new life." (as quoted in G. Stavitsky, et al., Cézanne and American Modernism, exhibition catalogue, Montclair, New Jersey, 2009, p. 188) The influence of the French artist's color and brushwork is certainly evident in the present effervescent work Landscape from 1913.
