Ingres’ admiration for the ‘divine Raphael’ is well-known, and puts in context this refined drawing, probably made during his first stay in the Eternal City as ‘pensionnaire’ of the Académie de France between 1806 and 1820. It copies Raphael’s celebrated fresco known as the Disputà (Disputation of the Holy Sacrament) in the Vatican Stanze. The drawing stands out among his copies after old masters, which are generally executed in graphite, his favorite medium.
