L’engouement pour ces objets précieux se développe après la Première Guerre mondiale, notamment lors de la période Art Déco. S'inspirant des "inro" japonais et chinois, délicates boîtes de formes variées dans lesquels sont conservées les poudres médicinales, les nécessaires servent à transporter rouge à lèvres, poudre et fard à joues. L'idée de la grande "Minaudière" nait lors d’une visite de Charles Arpels à sa cliente et amie, Florence Jay Gould qui utilise une grande boite à cigarettes en fer "Lucky Strike" en guise de sac à main, transportant ainsi son maquillage, ses cigarettes et son briquet. Monsieur Arpels dessine immédiatement la "Minaudière" qui remplace alors les sacs du soir et les sacs habillés.Masterpiece of beauty and ingenuity, the 'Minaudière' represents the apogée in the development of the vanity case. The latter became popular in the years following the First World War, during the Art Deco period in particular. Deriving inspiration from the Japanese and Chinese 'inro' in which medicinal powders were kept, they varied in form and were used to keep lipstick, powder and rouge. The idea for the larger 'Minaudière' came to Charles Arpels upon a visit to one of his most important clients and friend, Florence Jay Gould. She had transformed a large 'Lucky Strike' metal cigarette case into a purse, carrying her make-up, cigarettes and lighter. Arpels immediately drafted a design for the 'Minaudière' which would replace the evening and dressier afternoon bags.
