C’est en 1941, à l'âge de 16 ans, que David Webb quitte sa ville natale de Asheville, en Caroline du Nord, pour se rendre à New York, où il développe ses talents de dessinateur et joaillier. En 1948, il fonde la société David Webb Inc. et s'installe sur la 57ème rue. Ces créations des années 1950 et du début des années 1960 s’inspirent de la nature, figurant animaux, oiseaux, fleurs et formes organiques. Plus tard il adopte une nouvelle esthétique marquée par l’or martelé, l'émail, les couleurs vives et les motifs géométriques qui reflètent l'esprit des années 1970. À sa mort prématurée en 1975, David Webb est considéré comme "le" bijoutier de Manhattan.
In 1941, at the age of 16, David Webb travelled from his birthplace, Asheville, North Carolina, to New York City, where his special gifts as a jeweller and designer quickly became apparent. In 1948, he formed David Webb Inc., setting up shop on 57th Street. David Webb’s designs of the 1950s and early 1960s showcased endless variations on animals, birds, flowers and organic forms. He then adopted a new vocabulary of hammered gold, enamel, colours, textures and shapes, synthesised into geometric motifs that reflected the spirit of the 1970s. By his untimely death in 1975, David Webb had established himself as “the” jeweller in Manhattan.
