1897年的《雨中的哈弗爾廣場》是卡密爾·畢沙羅最後的城市街景系列作品之一，描繪了巴黎被雨水浸濕、微微閃爍的路面，人頭攢動的街頭，和繁忙的馬車及貨車。這個街景系列作品，使他成為世紀末巴黎的記錄者及最為多產的印象派藝術家。此時其他印象派藝術家都不再描繪現代生活的景象，轉向刻畫內心世界：德加轉向自己工作室裡的內心聖殿，莫內沉浸在吉維尼的園藝天堂，雷諾阿探尋古典主義浴者的世外之地。有別於他們，畢沙羅這位傑出的法國鄉村風景畫家，在他生命的最後十年，創作上有了很大的改變，開始描繪巴黎的城市喧囂和建築之美，以及諾曼底的海港小鎮如魯昂、迪耶普和勒阿弗爾。
