L'Aphrodite Anadyomène est une création hellénistique ancienne avec de nombreuses copies et variations ultérieures (voir fig. 220-224 dans Bieber, Ancient Copies). La déesse ne "s'élève pas de la mer" comme l'indique l'épithète, mais elle arrange plutôt ses cheveux, tenant d'épaisses tresses dans chaque main avant de les attacher ensemble en un chignon. Pour un exemple similaire à Munich, voir no. 448 dans Delivorrias, et al., "Aphrodite".
Le torse aurait appartenu à Madame Despina Sinadino, qui faisait partie d'une importante famille de banquiers d'Alexandrie qui, au début du XXe siècle, effectuaient des fouilles archéologiques et étaient de grands collectionneurs d'art.

The goddess is not "rising from the sea" as the epithet implies, but rather she is arranging her hair, holding thick tresses in each hand before tying them together in a chignon. The torso belonged to Madame Despina Sinadino, who was part of a prominent banking family in Alexandria which, at the beginning of the 20th century, carried out archaeological excavations and were keen art collectors.
