This highly charismatic and incredibly beautiful ultra-thin two-tone ‘Cioccolatone’ is one of only two examples of reference 2487 known publicly. The other is in the collection of the Patek Philippe Museum in Geneva. Of these two known pieces, the present watch is regarded as the best preserved with its original silvered dial with Extract-confirmed platinum indexes.
The large oversized yet elegantly thin case of reference 2487 is extremely unusual for a wristwatch model manufactured in 1950. It was without question intended as a bold and dramatic statement piece, indeed, the two-colour platinum and 18K yellow gold case lends an entirely individual aesthetic to the watch. As such, it is an extremely practical, wearable and highly individual vintage Patek Philippe for today’s collectors. Made by Geneva master case maker Ed Wenger, whose mark of number 1 in a key is engraved inside the case back, it retains amazingly well preserved with sharp edges and full proportions and crisp clear hallmarks for both gold and platinum.
Consigned by an important collector, this impressive, large and very rare reference 2487 would be a significant addition to any serious Patek Philippe watch collection and the perfect complement to a fine vintage wristwatch collection. Its architectural and timeless design remains modern even almost three quarters of a century after its creation.
