When it opened in 1999, the IMAX cinema at London's Waterloo was decorated with an enormous mural by Howard Hodgkin, for which the present work is a design. This photographically enlarged mural covered the glass circular wall of the outside of the cinema, providing a striking and eye-catching image for this modern building. Built by architect Bryan Avery on the roundabout at Waterloo Place, the IMAX cinema represented an important move towards the regeneration of this area. Hodgkin's mural provided a link between mass entertainment and the high culture presented in the nearby galleries on the South Bank.
