When Dieter Blume first encountered Table Piece CCCLXIV in Anthony Caro’s studio, it was still composed of only raw metal. A close companion to the artist, Blume was also a chemist, curator, and author of the comprehensive catalogue raisonné of Caro’s work. Many of the sculptures that Caro gifted to his friend were later donated to public collections across Europe, yet this particular work has remained in the family ever since, presenting Christie's with the rare opportunity to offer this important table piece to the market for the first time.
