The present work is a study for Joseph Stella's The Bridge, one of five panels from his masterwork The Voice of the City of New York Interpreted (1920-22, Newark Museum, Newark, New Jersey). The artist famously returned to the Brooklyn Bridge theme repeatedly in his career, celebrating the impressive structure as a symbol of the modern metropolis.
