This item will be transferred to an offsite wareho… 顯示更多 En 1939, l’appartement du 18, rue Las Cases n’est encore qu’une simple « boîte à louer », une habitation spartiate sans confort ni commodités, où Charlotte Perriand décide d’établir son bureau d’étude avec Pierre Jeanneret et Georges Blanchon. L’initiative est coupée par la guerre et les trois amis, réfugiés à Grenoble, en font leur pied-à-terre parisien avant que Pierre Jeanneret ne s’y installe en 1944. Tout change en 1946 au retour de Charlotte Perriand d’Extrême-Orient. Enrichie d’un dialogue culturel inédit, elle revient plus libre encore et signe en 1950 un écrit de référence, « L’art d’habiter » pour la revue Techniques et architecture. Ce texte exceptionnel fait la synthèse de 25 ans de réflexion où se mêlent considérations pratiques et analyses théoriques supportées d’une documentation foisonnante mettant en parallèle différentes cultures et époques. Cette prise de position réaffirme l’architecture d’intérieure comme un discipline égale à l’architecture et pose une rare voie féminine au sein d’un corps de créateurs encore très largement masculin.Devenue propriétaire de Las Cases en 1951, Perriand organise l’appartement autour des leçons édictées dans l’Art d’habiter : elle place quelques meubles d’avant-guerre, telles ces rares potences (lots 1 et 13) et installe toutes les innovations de son temps - salle de bain compacte, chaufferie moderne et cuisine équipé - mais c’est la réflexion sur le rangement qui structure l’habitat, « l’élément primordial de l’équipement domestique ». Dans une chambre un grand rangement (lot 6) s’étire sur un mur entier, dans l’entrée Charlotte Perriand profite d’un angle pour disposer d’un placard en biais formée de deux portes coulissantes (lot 8), dans la salle de bain le prototype du Placard Brazza, véritable pièce multifonction, fait office de meuble à toilette et déshabilloir (lot 3). Partout l’artiste crée des vides, des espaces où le mouvement devient possible et la vue dégagée. S’ils sont pratiques, les aménagements ne sont jamais stériles ou froids, Charlotte Perriand adoucit les contours des éléments : celui du plateau d’un passe-plat ou d’un pas de porte dont la forme ovoïde semble stimuler le toucher tout autant que la vue et invite l’habitant à en ressentir son dessin. La créatrice expérimente des polychromies plus élaborées que par le passé, où la chaleur du bois est complétée d’une palette composée de rouges et bleus à l’instar du Placard Brazza, faisant écho à ses célèbres bibliothèques Tunisie (1952) et Mexique (1952). Loin d’être figé, cet ensemble évolue au fil des ans et accueille les prototypes et pièces uniques que l’artiste dessine tout au long de sa carrière, il rassemble aussi une partie du mobilier conçu pour l’appartement tokyoïte de Jacques Martin formant ainsi un témoignage unique et complet de son œuvre. 23 ans après la disparition de Charlotte Perriand et deux ans après sa rétrospective à la fondation Louis Vuitton, Christie’s est heureux d’avoir l’occasion de rendre un nouvel hommage à l’une des plus grandes artistes de son temps.In 1939, the flat at 18, at Rue Las Cases was still a simple “rented box,” a spartan dwelling without any comfort or amenities, where Charlotte Perriand decided to establish her design office with Pierre Jeanneret and Georges Blanchon. The initiative was cut short by the war and the three friends, who took refuge in Grenoble, made it their Parisian pied-à-terre before Pierre Jeanneret settled there in 1944. Everything changed in 1946 when Charlotte Perriand returned from the Far East. Enriched by an unprecedented cultural dialogue, she returned freer than ever. And, in 1950, wrote a reference article entitled "L'art d'habiter" for Techniques et architecture magazine. This exceptional text synthesises 25 years of reflection in which practical considerations and theoretical analyses are combined with abundant documentation that compare different cultures and eras. Hence, this specific insight reaffirms interior decoration as a discipline on the same par as architecture and sets out a rare feminine path within a body of creators that is still largely male.Having become the owner of Cases in 1951, Perriand organised the flat around the detailed articles presented in Art of Living: she placed a few pieces of pre-war furniture, such as these luminous stems (lots 1 and 13) and installed all the innovations of her time —a compact bathroom, a modern boiler room and a fully equipped kitchen — but it was the thought process on storage that structured the home, “the primordial element of domestic equipment.” In a bedroom, a large storage unit (lot 6) stretches across an entire wall; in a corridor Charlotte Perriand takes advantage of a corner to create a slanted cupboard with two sliding doors (lot 8), in the bathroom, the Placard Brazza closet prototype, a real multi-purpose piece, serves as a toilet and dressing table (lot 3). Everywhere the artist creates voids, spaces where movement becomes possible and the view is unobstructed. Although they are practical, the fittings are never sterile or cold, Charlotte Perriand softens the contours of the elements: that of the pass-through tray or a threshold whose ovoid shape seems to stimulate the touch as much as the sight and invites the inhabitant to actually feel its design. The designer experiments with more elaborate polychromes than in the past, where the warmth of wood is enhanced by a palette of reds and blues, as in the Placard Brazza, echoing her famous Tunisie (1952) and Mexique (1952) bookcases. Far from being static, this collection evolved over the years and includes prototypes as well as unique pieces designed by the artist throughout her career. It also features some of the furniture designed for Jacques Martin's Tokyo flat, thus forming a unique and complete testimony to her work. 23 years after Charlotte Perriand's death and two years after her superb retrospective at the Louis Vuitton Foundation, Christie's is pleased to have the opportunity to pay a new tribute to one of the greatest artists of her time.
