The style of colorful lacquer decoration inlaid with mother-of-pearl is called Nagasaki raden. The word raden is a Japanese term for the method of inlaying mother-of-pearl into lacquer or woodwork to create intricate and multi-dimensional decoration. This technique, learned from Chinese craftsmen in Nagasaki during the Tang Dynasty, was used primarily on Japanese export works.
