CHURCHILL, Winston S. (1874-1965)
A History of the English-Speaking Peoples. London: 1956-1958.
Presentation set of the first English edition, all volumes inscribed by Churchill, and with the first volume inscribed some six weeks before publication. Woods states that the publication date of the first volume ('The Birth of Britain') was 23 April 1956, so this copy predates this by some six weeks, and might explain the absence of the dustjackets. It is significantly earlier than the copy presented by Churchill to Eleanor Roosevelt on the day of publication (sold Christie's New York, 8 May 2001, lot 30, $44,650). The second volume ('The New World') was published in November 1956, the third ('Age of Revolution') in October 1957, and the final volume ('The Great Democracies') in March 1958; all the volumes have presentation inscriptions dated with these publication months excepting the last volume which is dated April 1958. Woods A138(a).
4 volumes, large octavo (241 x 152mm). Full page maps. Publisher's red cloth, red top edges (without dustjackets, extremities faintly rubbed). Provenance: Winston S. Churchill (authorial presentation inscriptions in all volumes to:) – Anthony Eden.
